MANAGUA, Nicaragua - Aug. 26, 2014 - PRLog -- A recently published study by Gallup highlighted Nicaragua as the safest country in Latin America and the Caribbean. According to the study, residents of Nicaragua were the most likely in Latin America and the Caribbean to feel secure in their communities last year.

In 2013, Nicaragua scored a 67 (on a scale from 0 to 100) on Gallup’s Law and Order Index, which is based on confidence in local police, feelings of personal safety, and self-reported incidence of theft. In the region, Nicaragua, Panama, and Chile have the highest index scores, and each has seen sizable increases since 2009: Nicaragua improved 9 points, Panama 7 points and Chile 7 points as well.

The Law and Order Index is based on telephone and face-to-face interviews to approximately 1,000 adults in each country, aged 15 and older, from 2009 to 2013. The survey incorporates three simple “Yes/No” questions that gauge respondents’ sense of personal security and the incidence of crime: (1) In the city or area where you live, do you have confidence in the local police force?, (2) Do you feel safe walking alone at night in the city or area where you live?, and (3) Within the last 12 months, have you had money or property stolen from you or another household member?
