CHICAGO - Aug. 26, 2014 - PRLog -- Individuality and creativity for a couple’s wedding day style take center stage with Chicago-based Crafty Broads.  Drawing upon years of theatrical stage management and costume design experience, entrepreneurial couple Cindy Savage and Julia Zayas-Melendez started their business after designing their own silk wedding dresses, handling every detail of their own wedding celebration, and loving the process.  Today, the Crafty Broads apply their talents to the many projects engaged couples bring their way, from behind-the-scenes event management to creating and tailoring the perfect wedding attire.

“We can create the look that is just what you want – whether that's a traditional white gown, a bold splash of color, or not even a gown at all, we love honing in on your individual style,” says Savage.

Reportedly, the average spent on a wedding dress is about $1,200, while alterations and pressing can tack on another $300-$500. Considering a custom design by the Crafty Broads is comparable in price, with original dress designs beginning at $1,800.  A bespoke garment allows each client to select fabric, color, style and accessories to suit their taste, while altering a garment is a more frugal way of making a dramatic change in the final appearance – one that is tailored to perfection.

“One of our favorite original designs was a floor-length silk and wool evening coat with a single dramatic pleat in the back,” says Zayas-Melendez. “When she showed us her budget, we realized that we could include a stunning and practical addition to her winter wedding without breaking the bank.”

Inspired by 1930s glamour, her champagne-colored silk wedding gown with chevron details was a Crafty Broads favorite, too, “We didn’t want to let that one go,” Savage laughs.

Personalization is also a plus when considering custom design.  Asked to incorporate material from her grandmother's wedding dress, Zayas-Melendez surprised the bride at her final fitting by creating an original applique with the couples' names and wedding date. The Illinois-shaped patch was sewn into the lining of the bride's yellow, tea-length dress, offering a special nod to the past and a tie to her future.

“When I revealed how I’d incorporated this piece of history into her wedding dress, we both burst into tears,” says Zayas-Melendez. “We really do bond over the process of design and fitting, and this was a very meaningful addition to the experience,” she adds.

Planning ahead is helpful as the process of a custom garment takes time, with an average of six months devoted to the design, fitting and completion of a wedding dress. Many details are completed by hand, using time-honored couture techniques. Typically, less time is needed for clothing that needs only alterations.

“Dramatic changes can also be made with simple alterations, like turning a floor-length lace gown into the flirty party dress we made for one bride.  We shortened the dress and used the excess fabric from the train to create cap sleeves, a matching veil, and even added a splash of color with a custom sash,” remarks Zayas-Melendez. “The bride liked it so much that she asked us to create a matching tie for her groom as well!”

The Crafty Broads dub such major alterations “garment restyling”; hems, bustles, and other standard alterations are also part of their services.

“When a garment suits your personality and fits you perfectly, you look – and more importantly, feel – gorgeous! The moments where we can show someone how beautiful they are – that's why we do this,” says Savage.
