ATLANTA - Aug. 25, 2014 - PRLog -- When high school athlete Trey Rood was diagnosed with melanoma, he and his mother Cherie refused to view the statistic—a five-year survival rate of five percent—as anything but a challenge. Changing the Game Plan, to be released by BQB Publishing on August 27, follows the Rood family as they search for alternative treatments all over the world and ultimately celebrate a triumph of hope.

“You can’t let cancer control you—you have to step up and fight,” says Cherie, who wrote the memoir with her son. “No one told us about or recommended alternative therapies. Our journey led us to do the research ourselves.”

Trey’s initial diagnosis at age fifteen was stage III melanoma, which progressed to stage IV two years later. As a high school senior, he underwent numerous surgeries and challenges, plus five months of alternative treatment traveling back and forth to Germany, all while playing football as a starting defensive player in his hometown of Cumming, Georgia.

The family’s continuing search for options brought them to Houston’s MD Anderson Cancer Center in early 2010. Trey continued to battle eleven brain tumors throughout his journey as the horrible disease of melanoma relentlessly spread through his body. MD Anderson Cancer Center, where they found Dr. Patrick Hwu, later treated Trey as a participant in the adoptive T-cell therapy trial. Ultimately, this trial changed the path of his disease.

“Trey’s story is one of courage, love, and inspiration,” says Dr. Hwu, whose life-saving treatment has controlled Trey’s cancer with no evidence of disease four years later. Trey started his freshman year of college in 2010, has never looked back, continuing his incredible positive outlook on life and valuing his survival every day.

“Trey always believed he would be okay,” says Cherie. “We wrote Changing the Game Plan to encourage others to never give up.”
