It is with this degree of professionalism, compassion and dedication, Retina Specialists is please to announce Dr. Susan Gelman will be joining the practice on October 1st. Dr. Gelman specializes in the latest diagnostic and therapeutic techniques in treating medical diseases of the retina, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, and hereditary retinal dystrophies.
She received her B.S. degree from Monmouth University, NJ and her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeon. While at Columbia, she was awarded the Alfred Steiner Award for Best Medical Student Research, and the Edith and Denton McKane Graduation Award for excellence in ophthalmology research. As well as earning her medical degree at Columbia, Dr. Gelman also completed her Master’s Degree in Public Health from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. She has published several peer-reviewed manuscripts on retinopathy of prematurity.
After an internship in internal medicine, Dr. Gelman completed her ophthalmology residency training at New York University/Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Hospital, and then completed her fellowship in medical retina and ophthalmic genetics at the Jules Stein Eye Institute of the University of California, Los Angeles. She participated in retina-related research, in particular, the characteristics of age-related macular degeneration.
Dr. Gelman is affiliated with New York University and Bellevue Hospitals in New York, and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
