State officials learn first-hand about SCC Career Center and partnership opportunities

New Jersey Department of Labor (DOL) and Workforce Development Deputy Commissioner Dr. Aaron R. Fichtner recently visited the new Career Center at Salem Community College.

CARNEYS POINT, N.J. - Aug. 22, 2014 - PRLog -- Fichtner saw first-hand how SCC is promoting the state’s “Jobs4Jersey.com” outreach and discussed ways for the College to partner with the DOL on employment and workforce partnership initiatives.  He was joined by Catherine Starghill, the state’s Director of Workforce Field Services, and Patricia Moran, Ph.D., Director, Division of Workforce Grant & Program Management.   SCC representatives included President Joan M. Baillie and Director of Workforce Development Mary Ellen Hassler.

The SCC Career Center offers workshops to students on job hunting, cover letter and resume writing, and interviewing.  Students can use online career-exploration tools, meet area employers at information sessions, and learn about internship and job openings in the region.  The center’s mission aligns with Department of Labor’s “Jobs4Jersey.com” initiative.

The Career Center, managed by Hassler, is tied to SCC’s strategic initiative of developing and offering high-quality academic programs in high-demand fields in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).  The College’s STEM programs align with the State of New Jersey’s priorities in health care, advanced manufacturing, life sciences, financial services, technology and entrepreneurship.  STEM programs account for 67 percent of the College’s total enrollment.

The state representatives also learned the latest example of SCC responding to industry needs by starting a degree program in Process Operator Technology, in partnership with Paulsboro Refining Co.

According to the Department of Labor and Workforce Development website, Fichtner has made increasing partnerships with both two- and four-year colleges a priority.

For more information about SCC’s Career Center, call Hassler at (856) 351-2651 or e-mail mhassler@salemcc.edu.
