PALM BEACH, Fla. - Aug. 18, 2014 - PRLog -- THE COLONY HOTEL, PALM BEACH IS CLOSING ON SEPTEMBER 2

But Only for Five Weeks for a Dramatic and Colorful 'Reimagining' by International Designer Carleton Varney

Every Room, Every Restaurant, Even the Lobby Will Undergo a Multi-Million Dollar Transformation Before Gala Re-Opening on October 10

(Palm Beach, FL – August 18, 2014)  It is official.  The Colony Hotel – the center of Palm Beach Society since 1947 – is closing for the first time in 40 years.

According to Roger Everingham, the hotel’s Vice President & General Manager, The Colony’s front doors will be locked on September 2 so that internationally renowned decorator Carleton Varney, President of Dorothy Draper & Company, can complete his multi-million dollar transformation of the Palm Beach landmark.

"Carleton Varney and Brinsley Matthews have done an amazing job of bringing our guest rooms to new life," says Everingham. “Lively may even be an understatement considering the variety of colors; our just finished fourth floor, for example, has 19 different paint colors. Each room and suite is different – no cookie-cutter rooms here – put together with a lot of vivid upholstery, unique lamps and artwork, many by local artists. The result is a happy, classy feeling, but still with our classic British Colonial foundation.”

When it re-opens in early October, the hotel’s various rooms and suites will offer an amazing palette of vibrant colors, floral patterns and bold contrasts, with the latest high tech amenities such as large, flat-screen, smart TVs and Bluetooth-enabled telephones with built-in chargers, plus comforting slow-glow lights in the bathrooms, striped walk-in closets, luxurious Frette linens on every cushy bed, and dazzling views of the ocean, the Everglades Club golf course and the town of Palm Beach.

Varney, who has written a weekly design column for the Palm Beach Daily News for more than 30 years, is associated with the restoration and decoration of countless hotels and resorts all over the world, including Dromoland and Ashford Castles in Ireland; The Waldorf Towers and Plaza Hotel in New York; Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island (Michigan); The Breakers in Palm Beach and the Greenbrier in West Virginia. Based in New York City, Dorothy Draper & Co. is the oldest established interior design firm in the United States.

"I have known and loved this property for years and it is truly the one iconic hotel in Palm Beach,” said Varney. “My goal is to enhance and continue the classic tradition of The Colony.”

"The hotel may be closing in early September, but when we reopen five weeks later, The Colony will no doubt have the most vibrant and interesting look and ambience in town,” promises Everingham.

About The Colony Hotel - Palm Beach:
Located just steps away from shopping on world famous Worth Avenue and from a beautiful Atlantic Ocean beach, The Colony is an intimate, friendly boutique hotel that has played host to American Presidents and British Royalty, movie stars and corporate czars, and many of the Island’s “movers and shakers” – and by “movers and shakers,” we are referring not only to financial and political clout, but also to their musical motions at the world famous Royal Room Cabaret and their happy dance steps during Motown Friday Nights in the hotel’s popular Polo Steaks & Seafood.

Over the last several years The Colony Hotel has won numerous prestigious awards, including Hotel of the Year Award from the Hotel & Lodging Association of Palm Beach County (2012); the Quintessentially Palm Beach Award from the Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce as part of the town’s Centennial Celebration (2011); and the Providencia Award from Discover the Palm Beaches, the only time South Florida’s most impressive annual honor recognizing excellence within the local hospitality and tourism industry was awarded to a smaller, boutique hotel (2009).
