NEWBURY PARK, Calif. - Aug. 18, 2014 - PRLog -- The Miller Family YMCA of Newbury Park’s Youth & Government Fall program kicks off with its first meeting Wednesday, August 27 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.at Sycamore Canyon School (4601 Via Rio, Newbury Park). This leadership-building program is for teens in 9th through 12th grades.

Last year, the Miller Y Youth & Government delegation was over 50 strong. The teens meet weekly to learn about the legislative process and what it takes to participate in such roles as elected officials, judges, print and broadcast media, lobbyists and  political party members.. They then use those skills In November and January as they gather with delegations from more than 90 California YMCAs for training sessions at Camp Roberts National Guard Base near Paso Robles.

It’s at these training sessions that delegates prepare for their the Model Legislature & Court Conference held over five days in mid-February at the State Capitol in Sacramento. More than 2,600 delegates descend on the legislative chambers and state capitol conferences rooms to debate bills and pass laws.

"Each generation must learn about democracy so our system of government can remain strong," says Jessica Bringelson, Miller Y teen director. "Youth & Government provides participants with a well-rounded experience as well as an opportunity to meet teens from other Ys throughout the state. It’s challenging but also lots of fun."
