The 2014 BWABC Literacy Rocks Author of the Year award is presented to the person who has done the most to promote literacy in their city/state/town. In recognition of her efforts to promote literacy among the youth, Atlanta based Best Selling Author Kenni York has been nominated for this prestigious award.
Each summer author Kenni York hosts a book drive to promote summer reading. Too often the school doors close and our children neglect to read, losing important fundamentals needed for the next school year and life in general. Over the last four years Kenni's book drive has collected over 2000 books and hundreds of educational materials including flash cards, puzzles, activity books, and games. These items have been donated to places such as The Atlanta Children's Shelter, The Children's Hospital of Atlanta, the Browns Mill Recreation Center, the George Washington Carver Boys and Girls Club, and various independently owned daycare centers.
"I'm hoping that the community will take an interest in investing in our children and their educational development by participating in [these] book drives," says Kenni. "We all have a responsibility to give back to our children. Literacy is the sheer foundation for helping them to be successful in most areas of life."
Kenni's goal is to make a difference in the community and not just a dollar. Her company, Kenni Enterprises, also offers creative writing classes and workshops for children and adults in the Metro Atlanta Area. Kenni Enterprises also offers tutoring for students taking reading and writing based scholastic achievement tests.
"I'm dedicated to the written word and my community," says Kenni. "Giving back is a part of who I am."
