Aven's Diffuse Axial LED Illuminator for Microscopes Replaces Glare with Contrast

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Aug. 13, 2014 - PRLog -- Microscopic inspection and imaging of shiny surfaces presents a glare challenge that is overcome with Aven’s new Diffuse Axial LED Illuminator.

This microscope accessory with its own power supply provides flat, even lighting without shadows across the full area of electronic components, metal parts or other reflective objects. It’s ideal for examining clear-coated or embossed items.

“The highly diffuse, low-contrast illumination optimizes the dynamic range,” explains Mike Shahpurwala, president of Aven, Inc., a global provider of optical instruments. “This is the most reliable way to enhance scribed or indented features on a polished surface.”

Microscopically smooth, mirror-like surfaces reflect light in a concentrated bundle of rays. Without a diffuser, that creates hot spots and washed-out portions. Captured images haveunderexposed or overexposed areas that prevent further evaluation.

The Diffuse Axial LED Illuminator mounts to the objective lens and spreads light rays in different directions to create contrast between specular, diffuse and absorptive planes. It’s powered by a plug-in light controller with dimmer. The aperture size is 50 by 50 millimeters and the white LEDs have a lifespan of at least 20,000 hours.

“Low-temperature, energy-efficient LEDs are the best choice for microscopy lighting,” notes Shahpurwala.

Applications include semiconductor fabrication checks, electronics product inspection, materials analysis and specialized lab microscopy.

The new illuminator is designed for two series of Aven microscopes. For conventional lighting, the company has a ProLux LED Fiber Optic Illuminator, as well as eight LED ring lights and two fiber-optic models.
