Julie Dolan Explains How Landscaping Can Help Sell Your Home

PRLog - Aug. 11, 2014 - CONCORD, Mass. -- If you’ve sold your home before or are planning on selling anytime soon, you’ve probably heard of the notion of “curb appeal” – the first impression a prospective buyer has upon pulling up in front of your house for a showing. Beautifully manicured lawns that are tidy and bright hold tremendous appeal to neighbors, passers-by, and house hunters alike. Therefore, you can use your landscaping and the exterior of your home to help make a quicker sale.

Here are a few tips for making your yard look beautiful and inviting to potential buyers:

·         Keep it clean. Never underestimate the allure of a freshly mowed lawn and neatly-trimmed trees, hedges, and other shrubbery. Overgrown foliage can diminish the impact of the house itself and make a lawn look untamed, so keep your bushes pared back. In the fall, remove and bag leaves as often as possible. And if it’s wintertime when you’re showing your home, remove dead leaves, twigs, and branches and attend to any necessary snow removal.

·         Add a pop of color. There is nothing fresher and prettier than carefully maintained flowers, whether they are planted in beds, hanging in baskets, or lined up in pots. If you’re unsure which flowers will grow best in shade versus sun, or how robust certain varieties are, simply do a little online research or ask an employee at your local nursery. Just be sure not to overdo it. Some people will be turned off by anything overly ornate or fancy. Simplicity is best.

·          It’s not just about the greenery. Although your plantings are arguably the stars of the show, there is plenty to be said for beautifully designed walkways, careful sidewalk edging, and tasteful fences, dividers, and walls. Fresh mulch always makes a lawn pop, and adding a bird feeder or water element can give your yard a little extra character.

·         Make it easy. It doesn’t have to be difficult to care for your landscaping. By opting for hardy plant varieties and keeping your lawn trim, you can accomplish quite a lot. Small patches or bursts of color can really pop and set your property apart from others in the neighborhood. Stick to a watering routine that is easy to remember and you will keep your plants looking fresh.

A yard that is cultivated is often just a jumping-off point to a home that is equally maintained. Chances are that if you are diligent about how the outside of your home looks, you will carry over that sensibility to the indoors, and that will be perceived immediately by anyone who stops by to take a look when your home is on the market. If you are passionate about gardening, start with the outside of your home and then move indoors, decorating your rooms with tasteful house plants and fresh cut flowers.

And the best part of keeping on top of your landscaping when your home is up for sale? You get to enjoy it yourself every time you walk outside.
