By: Waste Management Last year, Waste Management of Iowa and the Iowa State Fair shattered a record, recycling nearly 35 tons of waste at the state fair. The company also launched an educational program on recycling for the 1,200 campers in the campgrounds that led to more than 8.6 tons of recycling in that area alone. In addition to promoting recycling opportunities at the fair, the company’s use of its CNG (compressed natural gas) vehicles is an effort to move toward zero waste at the fair. These CNG vehicles are powered by natural gas and release fewer emissions thandiesel trucks. The trucks can reduce greenhouse gas by over 21 percent compared to diesel engines. “This year, we are looking to set a new precedent for recycling at state fairs,” said Waste Management of Iowa spokesperson Lisa Disbrow. “We want fairgoers to come in with the mindset that they will recycle as much as they can during their time at the fair. Every year, we recycle more and more, and work to educate fairgoers, so we see this change in mindset happening in a big way.” What can be recycled/what we are doing to recycle: More than 300 recycling containers throughout the grounds for fairgoer use Recycling containers in the campgrounds Partnership with Keep Iowa Beautiful to maintain litter-free grounds Recycling containers for cardboard placed near storage areas for food vendors and merchants Cardboard collected twice a day from concessionaires throughout the grounds Program for recycling plastic cups during overnight grounds clean-up Utilizing environmentally- Collecting and recycling cooking oil Remember to do your part at the fair and Recycle Often, Recycle Right℠.
