BIRMINGHAM, U.K. - Aug. 6, 2014 - PRLog -- For many domestic wine buyers price is of course an important factor but even in the supermarket wines are arranged by country for a reason, and there are many good reasons why French wines are still so popular in the UK.

Trends in wine come and go. For example Co-op and Marks & Spencer have reportedly been the drivers for the big increase in Fairtrade Wine sales in the last 2 years.  For many of us however it’s a certain variety from a certain country that we may look for, and the signs are that the wines of France still hold an important place in our hearts here in the UK.

Taking Bordeaux as an example, the UK is its largest export market for dry white wines.  French customs figures show an 18% increase in UK orders for the wine last year. It seems that even members of the UK government prefer French Wine as Foreign Office figures showed it to be the most popular wine nation in terms of sales from the government’s own wine cellar in 2013.

Theories as to why French wines are still so widely favoured include the fact that the French have a long and great history of making wine themselves as well as providing the benchmark for many of the other popular wine growing areas such as California and Australia.

It would be difficult to dispute that France has 3 of the greatest wine making regions in Burgundy and Champagne, Bordeaux, and the popular, easy to drink mainly Sauvignon Blanc based dry white Bordeaux wines are proving to be very popular with younger drinkers who now account for a large proportion of wine sales.

Warren Adams of long established Coventry based independent, family-owned wine merchants says:

“We sell wines from at least 20 countries but we offer more wines from France from than any of the other countries because of its popularity. This enduring popularity comes from the fact that France is the standard of comparison for high quality wines.  The unique combination of soil and climate in the different areas not to mention their wine making skills, experience and methods help to produce some amazing wines. They are also great value when you consider the quality and the taste.”

Warren stresses that as a wine merchant they can also recommend and supply great wines from many other countries.

“We sell and deliver wines from a long list of countries from the most popular French, Australian, Chilean, South African, Spanish and Italian wines right down to the less well known but still great wines from Austria, Hungary, Lebanon, America and even Japan.  We have a wide UK delivery area as well as a Cash & Carry Trade Counter.  We sell wine online from our website and we offer a whole range of other services in including Restaurant Wine Lists and Tutored Presentations”.

Bablake Wines are not your typical Wine and drinks distributor. They are an independent,  family owned Wine Merchant with a long history in the going back over 80 years.  It is this knowledge and proximity to their customers, and to many different parts of the industry that makes them very sensitive to changes and customer needs in the wine market.

The clear strength of demand for great tasting, high quality French wines is the reason why over 300 different bottles are featured in the online shop at bablakewines.co.uk.  The next most popular country in terms of different bottles of wine stocked is Australia with over 60 different types.

French wines have the benefit of coming from one of the great original wine producing countries where the history, knowledge, regions and climates produce wines that are the blueprint for many of the wines produced in other countries.

French wines come from typically cooler temperate climatic regions such as Burgundy and Bordeaux, and this helps to give them a subtlety and lightness that tends to suit many different palates.

Wines from France are typically less sweet and have a lower alcohol content than for example the more robust Australian Wines. This means that French Wines are very well suited to being consumed with food.  This gives them wide commercial as well as domestic appeal e.g. for the Restaurant Trade.
