NAMSR: News- Medtronic launches NuVent EM sinus dilation system

ARLINGTON, Va. - Aug. 4, 2014 - PRLog -- The balloon sinus dilation system, NuVen, comes with built-in electromagnetic (EM) surgical navigation technology that aids the surgeon confirm anatomy and optimize the balloon placement during balloon sinus surgery, which is in part of the treatment of chronic sinusitis.

According to the company, by joining the NuVent system and Fusion ENT Navigation, surgeons can see the exact location of the NuVent instrument's tip on the Fusion screen.

The combination offers an additional tool to aid surgeons move through tissue and bone around the openings of the frontal, maxillary, and sphenoid sinuses to help restore drainage as minimally invasive as possible.

Sinus surgery is most often done to restore normal mucociliary clearance in the sinuses, when medical management fails to relieve symptoms. Medtronic vice-president and general manager of the ENT division Vince Racano said: "NuVent is very appealing to customers because of its novel built-in surgical EM navigation, ease-of-use, and the familiar sinus instrument styles. The system is another example of our innovative integration of technologies and therapies that brings Medtronic surgical synergy to the operating room, driving procedural excellence, economic value, and patient care."

Medtronic plans to carry out clinical trials to expand the indications for use of the NuVent product to additional procedures, such as, revision surgery.

Medtronic's surgical technologies business develops products and procedural solutions for surgical applications that include ear, nose, and throat; cranial and functional neurosurgery; spinal and orthopaedics; as well as general surgical oncology.
