Adults: Don't Let Math Derail Your Future

Maybe it’s returning to college for a degree or obtaining a certificate to enhance your career. Perhaps a promotion or important job interview is on the horizon. Each of these events could come with a math assessment. And, for many adults who have been out of school for a few years, taking a math placement test ranks last place on their bucket list.

Eliminate Roadblocks
The math placement assessments and tests don’t have to be so angst provoking. Yet, avoiding the tests won’t solve the problem and can limit your career advancement. Taking the assessment and not being prepared can result in extra time and money spent in developmental classes.  Nowadays, a strong foundation in math can provide the ability to immediately understand a number of industries and establish a career or make an impact in the job you already have.
For many adults, brushing up on math skills can provide the confidence to take an assessment test and achieve the best score possible.

Your College Link, a project of the IGEN Career Pathways grant that was awarded to the College of Lake County, has a new online program that can help refresh math skills. The program, EdReady, has been developed by NROC, a nationally recognized college and career readiness system. NROC is funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

New Community Resource
EdReady is available without charge to the CLC community. You do not need to be enrolled at CLC. Resources are available to 17 colleges in the consortia; different services are available in different areas.

Adults using EdReady can choose to work through one or all three modules: Fundamentals, Intermediate, and Advanced.  After taking an initial assessment, your score is correlated to math placement test results. This provides a baseline score that you can use to check improvement while refreshing your math memory (or leaning a new skill).  Increase your knowledge by progressing though the topics that the assessment has personalized for you.

These assessments are designed to help you prepare for exams, are good refreshers for those who need to strengthen math skills, and are helpful to determining your readiness for a course.
