BAY SHORE, N.Y. - Aug. 1, 2014 - PRLog -- Doggie U K9 Academy introduces the first-ever weight pulling seminar weekend and sanctioned competition for regular dog owners!  The barking excitement dogs have while gearing up to do a weight pull is like no other dog competition! The two-day event hosted by Doggie U’s own ‘Strong Island Pullers’ will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 with a educational seminar and weight pulling demo and on Sunday, October 19, a sanctioned and accredited competition for novices and professionals alike.

Dog owners on Long Island will finally have a chance to learn about weight pulling with a nationally recognized and sanctioned instructor in their own backyard at Doggie U.  On Saturday, Toni Yoakam, an expert speaker, judge and competitor in weight pulling and founder of the World Wide Weight Pull organization will be hosting the seminar.  Ms. Yoakam will go over the following: History of weight pull; show and explain the different harness types; Training Techniques Cardio vs. strengthening training; Rules of weight pull in various organizations; teaching that all pulls finish with a positive pull, no dog fails, ever; rules of competition for pulling; explain the different weight pull divisions/classes; demo’s with seasoned weight pullers; and Q & A throughout the morning session. On Saturday afternoon attending dogs will be weighed, measured be fitted with proper harnesses – and their owners instructed on how to put the harness on their dog and attach to the weight pulling cart.  All attendees will then be given the opportunity to teach their dog how to begin weight pulling!

On Sunday, there will be two official weigh pulling competition trials, in the morning and the afternoon.  In each competition pull on Sunday – dogs can compete for ribbons, points and titles in 7 different weight pull classes (based on the dogs weight).  Dogs will be awarded 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place for the most weight pulled in the class they compete in.

Weight pulling competitions are almost always held outside and out of state, Doggie U is proud to be bringing this exhilarating dog sport to the Long Island and tri-state area.  “With many people on Long Island always looking for something, new, competitive, fun and athletic to do with their dogs – we are so excited to be able to offer this to the dog community here,” stated Rolissa Nash, Principal and Co-Owners of Doggie U.  “Dogs of all sizes can join in on the fun as we have a small cart and a large cart for different size dogs.  During the seminar one of the demo dogs is actually a small Puggle that competes regularly and loves it!”

Weight pull classes for dogs start with the little guys – believe it or not dog’s even just 8lbs can compete!  All the way up to the big dawgs at 150lbs+ who can pull upwards of 6000lbs!

Doggie U will also be offering 6-week training programs beginning on October 28, 2014 for dog owners who can’t make the seminar.  The on going course will be available to teach dogs and their owners how to properly do a weight pull with their dogs which will get the dogs to a competition level with the training program.   Doggie U is now an accredited academy, and the only one in the area for weight pull through the World Wide Weight Pull Organization.

The cost to attend the seminar on Saturday is $75 per person, per dog and $40 for human attendees who want to learn without their dogs.  This is limited to 60 dogs in the seminar on Saturday and 100 human attendees. The cost to compete in any of the trials on Sunday is $25 per trial, per dog.
