SPOKANE, Wash. - July 31, 2014 - PRLog -- No one wants to have a house fire or to see the surrounding landscape blur from thick smoke caused by a forest fire. This past week Carrigan’s family had two personal encounters with fires and in both instances; the Red Cross was actively at work to assist everyone affected by the fires.

“Too close for comfort” are the words that came to Cindy Carrigan’s mind regarding these recent fires. The first “close call” was her family vacation that was planned for Winthrop, WA. Winthrop is this quaint and nostalgic mountain town in the Okanogan-Wenatchee Forest along the eastern side of the Cascades. The area has been in the news daily regarding the massive fires burning in the forest. The Red Cross has been there from the beginning.

The news has covered the extensive damage of the Okanogan-Wenatchee fire that kept Carrigan's family from its vacation to Winthrop. Yet, Carrigan’s change of vacation plans were a minor inconvenience compared to the losses of the people who live in that area. The Red Cross continues to impress Carrigan through its response in setting up disaster relief areas along with how it has filled many other needs of those affected by the fires.

Currently, the Red Cross Shelter at the Winthrop Barn is providing meals, water and a place to sleep for those affected by this horrendous fire! According to news reports, it is 67% contained and has burned over 250,000 acres! The Methow Valley’s Red Cross Shelter is located at the Winthrop Barn and is open 24/7. The Red Cross knows how important it is for people to remain in touch with family and rescue news so it provides cell phone charging stations along with comfort and aid.“Yes,” said Carrigan, “we had to change our vacation plans but we did not lose our home or our property and for that, we are very thankful. We were still able to take a much-needed family vacation only to return to another disaster that was too close for comfort.”

The other “close call” for her family involved her sister’s home. Right after returning from vacation Carrigan received a panicked call from her sister that her Spokane home was on fire! Carrigan’s quick response was not as fast as the Red Cross’s response time! The Red Cross was there before Carrigan, and was already providing comfort and aid.

Carrigan was deeply moved by the rapid responsiveness of the Red Cross. Because of this impact, Five Star Realty Group has decided to support the Red Cross and become more actively involved by volunteering with the Red Cross and other emergency response organizations in Spokane. The citizens of Spokane and the state of Washington have witnessed firsthand the quality of care shown by emergency response teams during this summer of disasters.
