PRLog - Jul. 30, 2014 - NAIROBI, Kenya -- Siemens has partnered as a platinum sponsor with the 16th annual East African Power Industry Convention or EAPIC that is taking place from 3-4 September in Nairobi, Kenya.  The conference and expo will gather more than 1000 attendees along with exhibitors showcasing the latest technologies, products and services across the entire energy value chain from generation, transmission, distribution and services.

Region undergoing an energy revolution
Rachel Lutwama, Head, Emerging Energy Markets Sales at Siemens says: “the East African energy market has one of the most diversified energy resource mixes to support a cohesive and sustainable power supply programme ranging from the conventional hydro, coal, and geothermal, to natural gas, oil, wind, solar and biomass feed stocks.”

Last year, the East Africa Community revealed a $64-billion dollar spending plan on joint power projects in the region for the next 25 years to generate eight times more power than is currently available.

Siemens’s Rachel Lutwama adds: “like elsewhere in the world, the region is undergoing an energy revolution. Siemens is excited about the region’s energy expansion prospects and continues to invest in order to deliver high quality products and solutions, at a competitive price advantage to its clients and partners.”

Siemens involved in mega power projects
Siemens was and is involved in the supply, installation and commissioning of some of the region’s mega power system projects, including:

•  Siemens of Sweden was the turbine supplier for the 100MW Ubungo II gas fired power plant through TANESCO’s (EPC) contractor Jacobsen Elektro AS.
•  The extension of the 220 kV Rabai and Embakasi substations as part of the Mombasa-Nairobi transmission line project for KETRACO
•  Siemens Transmission & Distribution S.A.S. of France is currently constructing a 220kV substation at Suswa for KETRACO a project jointly funded by Agence Française Dévelopment (AFD) and the Kenyan Government.
•  And numerous other system rehabilitation, regional interconnection projects and new generation projects are currently under development.

Platform to engage
EAPIC
will once again gather the region’s leading power utilities, investors and technology and service providers as the event returns to Nairobi from 3-4 September for its 16th edition. Kenyan utilities KENGEN, Kenya Power, KETRACO and the Ministries of Energy are key partners again in what is the longest running power conference and expo in East Africa. Large East African utilities such as Tanesco, UEGCL, UMEME, EEPCO and many more will also be present again this year.

Says Rachel Lutwama: “Siemens is one of the long standing sponsors of this regional event and has been since the launch of EAPIC forum back in 1998 and will continue to utilize this platform to engage with policy makers, utilities, IPPs, EPCs, financial institutions and other industry service providers to debate issues and suggest solutions that will mould and shape the future of the regional energy industry in the years to come.”
