CARLISLE, Pa. - July 29, 2014 - PRLog -- Millions of people worldwide are diagnosed with some form of cancer annually and millions more are affected by proxy.  The battle to combat this horrible affliction continues daily and Carlisle Events is doing its part in September to help not only raise awareness but money for the Harrisburg branch of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.   The funds will be collected via the inaugural Camo 5K Run/Walk which is slated for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, September 5 at the Carlisle PA Fairgrounds.  In addition, the Camo 5K helps conclude day one of the second annual Carlisle Sports & Outdoor Show, which runs through Sunday, September 7.

Registration for the event can occur online now or onsite September 5.  The pre-registration costs are $30 and day of registration is $35.  Pre-registration assures an event t-shirt and the deadline to do so is August 22.  Otherwise, registration also includes awards for various categories, water from Pepsi/Aquafina and a day pass for the Carlisle Sports & Outdoor Show.  The 5K Camo Run/Walk is fun for all ages and benefits a great cause.  Participants don’t have to be an outdoor enthusiast or wear camouflage to enjoy the fun, though a camo motif would fit well with the theme of the weekend.

Though the battle on cancer as a whole continues each minute of every day, the focus of this event is on the fight against Myeloma, Leukemia and Lymphoma (Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin).   The data on all of this is staggering. Leukemia favors the male demographic by 31% and causes almost 1/3 of all cancer deaths in children and adolescents younger than 15.  In Pennsylvania alone, approximately 2,340 cases were diagnosed in 2012.  Similar data supports Lymphoma and Myeloma.  For those suffering from Lymphoma, the Non-Hodgkin version is the seventh most common cancer in the U.S. and in 2012, Pennsylvania saw 3,510 new cases of NHL diagnosed.  Over half a million people are living with or in remission from Lymphoma across the country.  Finally, Myeloma is a cancer that is frequently found around the age of 69 and more frequently affects black males and females versus whites.  Nearly 1,000 cases of Myeloma were diagnosed in 2012.

Facts aside, cancer has also affected those within the Carlisle Events family.  Carlisle Sports & Outdoor event manager Scott Amig recently learned his wife has cancer and a part-time staffer of Carlisle, also recently found out that her son has been diagnosed with Leukemia.  This aside, Carlisle Events wants to give back and further support a great cause by hosting the Camo 5K Run/Walk as part of the Sports & Outdoor show weekend.

“The 5K Camo Run/Walk gives us the opportunity to add a fun event to our show as well as help the local Leukemia & Lymphoma Society,” said event manager Scott Amig.  “Carlisle Events has always been involved in the local community and this is another opportunity to help.  I encourage you to come out and get the self satisfaction of completing a race, at your pace and help a great cause while you are doing it.”
