Former Staff Member of Dr. Franklin Perkins School Found Guilty of Rape of a Special Needs Student

LANCASTER, Mass. - July 28, 2014 - PRLog -- On Thursday, July 24, 2014, a Worcester County jury found Darren Pellerin, 44, guilty of two counts of Rape of a Child Aggravated by Age Difference and one count of Indecent Assault and Battery of a Child.  The jury deliberated for a day before rendering its verdict.  At the time, Mr. Pellerin was a member of the overnight staff of the Doctor Franklin Perkins School.  The incident occurred during the 2010-2011 school year.

The Perkins School is located in Lancaster, Massachusetts and provides educational and therapeutic services to children and adolescents with psychiatric and emotional issues.  Following the allegations of child sexual abuse, Mr. Pellerin, who had been a member of the overnight staff for nine years, was discharged.  According to a report by the Massachusetts Department of Children & Families, similar allegations were made against Mr. Pellerin in 2002 that were investigated.

The sentencing hearing for the two convictions of rape of a child and indecent assault and battery of a child is scheduled for Thursday, July 31, 2014.

According to Attorney Thomas M. Kiley of Kiley Law Group, LLC, who represents the victim and his family, “This is the most pernicious form of child abuse involving a child with special needs that is the least able to protect himself from this abhorrent conduct.  Schools, such as the Perkins School, have a responsibility to provide a safe residential environment for these children and protect them from this type of abuse.”
