Olympic Triumph at YMCA Summer Camp

AUSTIN, Texas - July 28, 2014 - PRLog -- More than 700 YMCA campers gathered on Friday, July 25, 2014 to compete in the annual Summer Camp Olympic Day at Texas School for the Deaf.  The event lasted from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. including the Opening Ceremonies, water slides and activity stations.

Olympic Day has been a camp tradition for more than 15 years.  It is a day for fun, enrichment and competition.  Each summer, camp sites are designated a country to study for the first four days of the week. Campers listen to music, read stories and learn about the culture of the country they were assigned.  Summer Camp kids from 18 locations participated in Olympic Day this year.

The morning started with the Parade of Nations, where campers proudly waved their flags as they made a lap around the track with their country’s national anthem playing in the background.  Some camps wore matching T-shirts while others made costumes, such as togas for Greece.  The kids showed their excitement for the day’s activities through their camp cheers and chants.

After all 18 countries were announced, campers broke into groups based on their age to enjoy various activities.  The campers stayed cool with stations such as water slides, sponge relay races, and bozo buckets.  Tents with water and orange slices were also set up to give the kids time to hydrate in the shade.

“Most events require teamwork but all are just plain fun,” said Andrew Wiggins, District Executive for the YMCA of Austin.

The competition ended around lunch time, so the campers could cool off and eat lunch.  At this time, camp staff participated in a tug-of-war competition for the right to call themselves the strongest camp.

“Even though the kids aren’t the ones pulling, they really get into it!” said Wiggins.

Olympic Day is an opportunity for kids to go outside and be active, as well as learn new facts about another culture. Campers were excited to compete, while they practiced good sportsmanship and teamwork.
