Baseline Concussion Testing is now available for local athletes at Doctors Express Granger

July 28, 2014.  Doctors Express Urgent Care, located in the Heritage Square Shopping Center, is now providing baseline concussion testing for area athletes utilizing a computerized assessment tool developed by Axon Sports.  This assessment tool is a standardized test utilized by many specialists around the country including physicians with St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Memorial Hospital and Notre Dame Sports.  This test is designed for as young as 10 years old and requires about 15 minutes to complete.  This test is not an intelligence test, it measures select brain processes specifically attention, learning, working memory, and processing speed

This test can be taken at any time but is most often completed prior to the start of a sports season.  Axon Sports recommends yearly baseline testing for athletes younger than 15 because cognitive changes occur yearly as young athletes continue growing/maturing.  All exam results are stored for 15 years and are easily available if ever needed.

This same test, when taken after a concussion, can help qualified Medical Providers determine any cognitive changes and provide them with another tool to assess when an athlete has recovered enough to resume playing their sport and other normal daily activities.   An After Injury test can be taken after a suspected head injury occurs and once physical, sleep and mood symptoms are gone.

Recent statistics show that 10% of all athletes regardless of their sports suffer a concussion every year.  Those athletes that have had one concussion are more likely to suffer a second concussion.

A 2011 study of U.S. high schools with at least one athletic trainer on staff found that concussions accounted for nearly 15% of all sports related injuries reported to athletic trainers.  This number is increasing as diagnosis of concussions becomes a bigger priority for many athletic programs.

Athletes ages 16 to 19 sustain 29% of all sports-related concussions.
