LANSING, Mich. - July 28, 2014 - PRLog -- Accreditation of a certification program is the process by which an entity recognizes a program as conforming to a standard.  It is essential for developing a certification that is recognized by government agencies and industry and provides true value for the certification holder.

ABIH, as the certifying board for the CIH program, is dedicated to maintaining uncompromised integrity, global recognition and career-lasting value for its Diplomates.  Accreditation ofABIH’s certification program itself has long been an integral part of achieving these goals.

The Certified Industrial Hygienist program is accredited by:

American National Standards Institute (ANSI) - ANSI accreditation was awarded under the ANSI standard ISO/IEC 17024 - Conformity assessment - General requirements for bodies operating certification of persons and was effective on March 13, 2009. The ANSI accreditation is good for a 5-year period and ABIH is currently renewing its accreditation. Since 2009, ABIH has been required to demonstrate ongoing continuous improvement under the ISO/IEC 17024 standard.

National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) – In 2013, ABIH received NCCA accreditation of its CIH program by showing compliance with the NCCA’s Standards for the Accreditation of Certification Programs.  NCCA is the accrediting body of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence.  Since 1977, the NCCA has been accrediting certifying programs based on the highest quality standards in professional certification to ensure the programs adhere to modern standards of practice in the certification industry.

“In addition to ANSI and NCCA accrediting the CIH program, ABIH is a recognized certification board by the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA),” said Tracy Parsons, CIH, Administrative Program Manager at ABIH.   “IOHA is an association of organizations from across the world, all of which are dedicated to the discipline and application of the inherent principles of occupational hygiene. ABIH’s certification scheme has been recognized by IOHA since 2003.”

The demanding standards of the CIH program means that only an elite group of professionals has this designation, making it the premier standard within the industrial hygiene community for more than 50 years.
