European Commission Approves to Expand Permitted Use of Nickel under Toy Safety Directive

The Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC has recently been amended to include the permitted use of nickel in toy components intended to conduct an electric current. The new Directive will take effect on 1 July 2015.

HONG KONG, China - July 24, 2014 - PRLog -- In March 2014, SGS informed readers that the EU Commission Committee for Toy Safety voted in favor to expand the permitted use of nickel under the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC (TSD) (1). Nickel is a carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic (CMR) category 2 substance and is allowed to be used in toys and toy components manufactured from stainless steel (2).

Toy Safety Directive – Use of Nickel

On 1 July 2014, Directive 2014/84/EU was published in the OJEU to permit the use of nickel in toy components which are intended to conduct an electric current (3). To accommodate the new permitted use of nickel as a CMR 2 substance, Member States must transpose the Directive into their National Laws by 1 July 2015; the date of enforcement of the new Directive.

Highlights of the new Directive, as well as the current permitted use of nickel as a CMR category 2 substance, are summarized in Table 1 (http://newsletter.sgs.com/eNewsletterPro/uploadedimages/000006/sgs-safeguards-13414-eu-permitted-use-of-nickel-toy-safety-a4-en-14.pdf) within the latest SafeGuards bulletin.
