The main objective of the project is to generate know-how among children – especially from an underprivileged background – on growing their own food by through a vegetable garden in the school premises and compost pits for effective organic waste management, thereby reducing energy and resource consumption. At the same time, plantation will also be carried out in the selected schools to purify air and nurture the environment, while inculcating the same values in children. The children are encouraged and motivated to maintain the vegetable garden and plants, to develop ownership and responsibility towards the environment.
On 23rd July, the project was kick started with the first activity at one of the selected project sites – GovernmentPrimary School, Rosewood City, Gurgaon. The event began at 9am with an interaction between the students, volunteers from LeasePlan and members of Advit Foundation. After a short session of introductions, and a general brief by Ms. Charu Jain, Director, Advit Foundation, to the students about the activity and the importance of taking care of plants; the students and volunteers planted trees of flowering and fruiting kinds and then went on to sow seeds of various vegetables in beds that had been prepared for this purpose. The children were taught how to sow seeds, and how the plants were to be cared for. The students very meticulously got involved in the activity. The children showed high levels of enthusiasm and were eager to look after the vegetables and fruits they had just planted.
The students welcomed a break from their classrooms and enjoyed getting their hands dirty through this activity. The volunteers displayed equal enthusiasm and enjoyed interacting with the children. Mr. Sanjeev Prasad, Managing Director, LeasePlan who took part in the plantation activity appreciated the thought process behind the project and wished all the best for its success.
The project will be carried out in 3 schools selected by Advit and LeasePlan. Over the year, the project will benefit the schools, students as well as the environment through its activities. This project is an extension of a pilot project by Advit Foundation. To know more about the project, please click here (http://advit.org/?
