The Emprint ablation system aspect is designed to deliver precise ablation directly to soft tissue, including tumors within the liver. This technology is anticipated to safeguard a more effective way to the target location and tissue type, making liver tumor ablation more precise. Covidien’s ablation system offers clinicians three varieties of spatial energy control, thermal, field and wavelength. This helps to create predictable and spherical ablation zones irrespective of target location, tissue type or variations in tissue properties during a procedure. By providing predictable spherical ablation zones, the technology gives physicians more choices in terms of method, further simplifying needle placement thereby saving precious planning and procedure time. A liver tumor ablation procedure destroys the tumor without removing it, thus providing a substitute to open surgery resection or other treatments. This technique is perfect for patients of whom surgical removal of tumors is not an ideal solution. With Covidien’s ablation system, physicians can treat liver tumor by non-surgical procedures. Utilizing ultrasound or CT (computed tomography) scanning to lead the system’s antenna and insert it directly into the tumor through the skin. Apart from non-surgical procedures, Covidien’s progressive ablation system can also be used for minimally invasive surgery and open surgery. Covidien received the U.S. Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance for Emprint in April of this year. The company has also finalized all European requirements for attaining the CE mark for the product.
