Afraid of the dentist? Do you put off your dental appointments due to fear or anxiety? Bacteria that builds up on teeth make gums prone to infection. The immune system moves in to attack the infection and the gums become inflamed. Over time, inflammation and the chemicals it releases eat away at the gums and bone structure that hold teeth in place. The result is severe gum disease which can be dangerous for your health.

True dental phobia is a problem amongst 10% of the world’s population. 5% Australian, 12 % British, 14% American population suffer from extreme dental anxiety. A painful dental procedure will trigger a stress alarm response among patients.

In order to minimize stress in a dental setting, there are two broad methods available: external or internal. External methods include giving patients medication to reduce anxiety, sedation and even psychotherapy. Internal methods aim to switch on the body’s own relaxation response.

Sedation is a medical practice used to reduce anxiety and dull consciousness in patients. However even when administered by an experienced professional, sedation can cause side effects.

Among side effects of sedation are suppression of your rate of breathing, which puts you at risk for not getting enough oxygen to your brain. Your blood pressure can also drop below safe levels. In severe cases, the reaction can be severe enough to be fatal.
The other side effects of sedation depend on the sedative your doctor gives you. Nitrous oxide can cause nausea and vomiting. Propofol can result in marked depression of your breathing rate. Some side effects are rare but serious. Halothane can trigger inflammatory hepatitis.

The Recovery Spa experience

Dr Nader Malik, a graduate of the University of Sydney Dental School, took an immediate interest in understanding and treating the strong links between teeth and our total body health. These links include the effect of  your teeth on your head and body posture, the importance of correct nutrition and the treatment of dentally related headaches and jaw pains.

A firm believer in total patient health care, Dr Malik collaborates eagerly with medical doctors, nutritionists, naturopaths to ensure the best outcome for patients.

Having a dislike to “drug up” his patients as the first option he started to research drug-free methods of stress relief. He was determined to shift the patient experience from fear and anxiety to relaxation and serenity. For any relaxation technique to be effective, it needed to work on the majority of patients, be safe and create a positive perception of the dental experience. This culminated in introducing the Recovery Spa concept to his patients. A blend of ambient lighting, aromatherapy and The Alphamusic of John Levine are used to bring the patient quickly into a calm serene state of mind. The music, in particular, has the impact of slowing the brainwaves down from an anxious (alarm) state to a pre-sleep alpha wave pattern.

Initially, from a recommendation by Patrick Holford, a world-renowned nutrition expert,
Dr Malik began incorporating the use of Alphamusic to reduce dental phobia and aid relaxation.

‘We use them in the waiting area of our dental clinic, our exclusive Recovery Spa™, and during patient treatment (with headphones),’ says Dr Malik. ‘Levine’s Alphamusic is unique in that it is deliberately designed to induce a relaxed and meditative state in the brain by switching off the neurons associated with stress and anxiety’.

Dr Nader Malik and John Levine are available for interviews explaining how natural methods such as calming Alphamusic can replace drugs in dentistry.
