Runners can now connect Bluetooth 4.0 heart rate monitors such as the Polar H7 or the Wahoo TickR. Track Runner analyzes heart rate data in real-time and provides heart rate zone notifications to guide the runner. Rich cardio analytics – average and max heart rate, info-graphs relating stress to pace, heart rate by split and the new Cardio Map - provide context and help runners understand their performance level.
The new update, initially available for Windows Phone 8.1, taps into the market trend of utilizing processing resources on smartphones to analyze motion data, replacing dedicated fitness gadgets such as pedometers, stride sensors or GPS watches. “Previously this has only been available on the iPhone 5s”, says Sarah Fegert, co-founder of The App Cauldron, “but Nokia’s latest Lumia devices bring motion data to a more affordable price point. That’s why we were excited to work with Microsoft to bring Cadence Analysis and Auto-Pause to Track Runner.”
Studies have shown that runners can minimize their injury risk by adopting a higher stride rate (the steps taken per minute). A higher stride rate can reduce stress on the knee and ankle joints and is positively correlated with lowered injury incidence in runners. The new Cadence Analysis in Track Runner lets users see their stride rate, and is fully integrated with Gear Tracking to compare the stride rate on different pairs of shoes.
Auto-Pause automatically pauses the run after 5-10s of complete inactivity, for example at traffic lights. Once the runner is moving again for a short distance, the run is automatically resumed.
Cadence Analysis and Auto-Pause are available on select Nokia devices. The update also brings better social sharing, total climb and advanced voice notifications.
