LOS ANGELES - July 21, 2014 - PRLog -- AstraZeneca has made over $32 Billion from sales of its blockbuster drug Seroquel (quetiapine).  The American military has blown hundreds of millions of dollars on this drug only to discover it “not effective against post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  In 2009 alone the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), now so much in the news, spent $125.4 millions and the Pentagon $8.6 million on Seroquel.

After years of pleading by military families, the US Central Command removed the powerful antipsychotic from its approved formulary list. Doctors now need a waiver to write a prescription for Seroquel in combat zones, reported Military Times (http://www.armytimes.com/news/2012/06/military-dod-cracks-down-on-off-label-seroquel-use-061412w/), and the Army, The Navy Department and the Air Force are tightening use.

Meanwhile, as the FDA considered whether or not to issue extended warnings on Seroquel due to reports of heart risks, AstraZeneca made over $2 billion more on sales.

Now that the patent has run out it seems more attention is being paid to the ineffectiveness and risks associated with this drug.

In 2010, the company paid $520 million for marketing the drug off-label and for the debilitating side-effects patients experienced.  But what is that compared with the multiple $billions made on sales.

Although off patent, Seroquel (quetiapine) continues to be prescribed to people of all ages, from toddlers to the elderly, despite all the warnings of serious short and long terms effects.

Anyone who is prescribed this drug by their doctor should seek a second (or third) opinion.
