Who's Your Mudder? "Sugar and spice and everything nice...that's what girls are made of."

AUBURN, N.Y. - July 16, 2014 - PRLog -- Turns out, this cook needs to revisit the recipe card, because a few ingredients seem to be missing. What happened to everything not so nice, like some good old-fashioned competition and getting dirty?

Today's "girls" are made up of all of this and more, and nowhere is this more evident than their fast-growing interest in mud runs. What many may label as a "man's man" type of event is being overwhelmingly adopted and conquered by strong women of all fitness levels. These military-style trail runs are filled with fun obstacles designed to test the endurance of their participants, but they also encourage teamwork, camaraderie, and what else? Getting muddy.

The Finger Lakes Mud Run at Everest Park is no exception, and women are turning out in droves for this event. In fact, women make up approximately 54% of all of the Finger Lakes Mud Run participants. With the average female participant at 32, women in their late 20s to mid-40s make up about half of these muddy maids.

Think you might be too old to run? Think again. Even women in their 70s are taking on these challenging obstacles, and all of them—whether young or young at heart—are doing it in style. It's not as unusual as you might think to see a team of runaway brides sliding into mud pits, scaling walls, and burrowing through trenches; in fact, costumes are encouraged, and the crazier, the better.

This year's competition, to be held on September 27 at Everest Park in Owasco, NY, will again feature three popular courses, including the 5K short course (for those not quite ready for the big time), the 14K long course (for all of you with experience in getting dirty) and the ever popular Mini Muddy, for kids who just can't seem to get enough of playing in the mud. Organizers are expecting more than 2,000 participants, many of them women, in addition to spectators and the volunteers who serve as the backbone for this event.

Why would women—or anyone— put themselves through this chaos? Because these events are all about teamwork, friendship, endurance, and proving to yourself—and maybe some friends on Facebook, courtesy of some epic selfies—that you have what it takes, and you don't mind getting muddy doing so. And because girls aren't just sugar and spice and everything nice. Throw in some strength, add some sweat, and top it off with some fun (and mud!), and you've got yourself a recipe for a real mudder.
