Project opens up The Burren for people with disabilities

LISDOONVARNA, Ireland - July 16, 2014 - PRLog -- A recently concluded pilot project, funded through the GeoparkLIFE programme, saw Brothers of Charity Service users and support staff participate in guided tours of a number of well-known tourism landmarks including Aillwee Cave, Poulnabrone, Caherconnell Fort and Slieve Carron.

The Geopark said feedback from project participants will be used to identify locations that can be easily accessed by people with disabilities, as well as to develop itineraries and programmes tailored specifically for small groups who wish to engage with the locations as learning spaces.

The feedback will also guide the development of suitable training for local tour guides and teachers wishing to work with these groups in the Burren.

Meanwhile, a short film documenting the experiences of participants in the pilot project has been made available on the Geopark website at www.burrengeopark.ie. The film is produced and directed by Fergus Tighe.

"Not every location in the Burren will be accessible but a number of locations are demonstration sites under the GeoparkLIFE project. We are working to make these sites accessible to as many groups as possible in terms of practical access and also from an educational standpoint," explained Carol Gleeson, Project Manager, Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark.

She continued: "We have clearly demonstrated through the pilot that heritage education can be tailored and delivered successfully in bespoke programmes yet fulfilling the universal learning and experiences available to us all.  We are now committed to developing these programmes and improving access to a number of sites including include Blackhead / Fanore, Aillwee Cave, An Rath / Cahermore, Poulnabrone / Caherconnell, Carran Church, National Park and Slieve Carron."

Kevin Delaney, manager of the Brothers of Charity Streetwise Training Programme in Ennis, was part of the team that established the partnership for this pilot project.
He explained: “In many ways this small pilot project punches above its weight. We really wanted to test the level of accessibility and create a template for heritage education for adults with both intellectual and physical disabilities."

Mr. Delaney added: "The level of expertise and interest brought to the project by Carol Gleeson and tour guide Tony Kirby allowed my colleague Moureen Kelly to develop a key teaching pack that led participating students to embrace an experience that to date has not been available for people with disabilities. We hope to take this work further and it would be brilliant to develop an accessible programme across the Burren in partnership with the Geopark."

"We strive at every opportunity to explore inclusion and access for our students. Working with small groups of students in this way ensures the outcomes are always learner focused and driven. The students who took park in the pilot project embraced the opportunity to explore that which is on their doorstep and each of them rose to the challenges presented by access and interpretation, which the rest of us can so often take for granted," stated Mr. Delaney.

Burren-based walking tourism operator and heritage education tutor, Tony Kirby described the programme as "quite radical and exciting."

He said: "The learners regarded the outdoors as the most stimulating education environment of all I think the programme and the film thereof make a compelling case for a lot more heritage education for people with disabilities, particularly in the outdoors. It was a real privilege for me to be involved.”
