15th July 2014 Chinese Economic and Market Update

Markets in China have been performing well of late and this week will see some further guidance as key economic data is released.

Today we were updated on FDI and New Loans data of which both came in above expectations. Foreign Direct Investment which stalled last month was up 2.2% in June. New loans, which were forecast to be ¥915bn actually broke ¥1tn ($173.9bn) in June which was a sign that the policies the government placed to make it easier and faster for banks to lend money had started to take effect.

Tomorrow we will receive the revised GDP Growth Rate and Retail Sales data. GDP out of China has been affected by poor export orders and this along with Retails Sales data will be a pivotal day in understanding whether the domestic market and its demand is making an impact against the drop in exports seen this past few months. For the month, GDP is expected to have increased just over 2%, in keeping with the years target of 7.4% growth.

To round off the week, House Price Index data will be released and this again will be an key indicator as to whether the housing market is facing a correction. Prices in mainland China have skyrocketed and have long been seen as artificially high and many see this as a major hurdle for the economy to expand.
