Racer Dan Harm Credits Cycling For Changing His Life

PORTLAND, Ore. - July 14, 2014 - PRLog -- The anticipation is growing as the 16th annual Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge nears. This 3-day competition draws elite track cyclists, national and international athletes, Olympians and the best local riders all competing for track records and cash prizes.

Race coordinator, Charles Warner, tells us one racer to watch this year is, 10-year veteran of the sport, Dan Harm. What stands out most about him, besides his numerous racing medals, is his philosophy on living a low-impact lifestyle. He came upon this idea of living low-impact one day and decided that he wanted to be on his bike and not feel stuck.

“I have no problem with cars, rather, the issue comes down to the over-use of them. My decision to not own a car has to do with low-impact, but, even more so, my decision to bike everywhere is more about wanting to use my body to the fullest. Moving my body over the earth with my own energy is very empowering,” says Harm.

Harm travels around the nation to compete in races and after 10 years, he found that winning was not everything. It was the intense mental focus that the sport demanded that sucked him in. Now it is the thrill of speed, tactics and camaraderie that he enjoys most. “For me, winning is so contextual and arbitrary. I think it is more important to be competitive inside yourself, not against other people.”

Harm will be travelling down to Portland (via train) from Seattle to participate in the Velodrome Challenge happening July 18, 19 and 20 at Alpenrose Dairy.
