NAMSR News: St. Jude announces that it will buy NeuroTherm a chronic pain treatment company for $200

ARLINGTON, Va. - July 14, 2014 - PRLog -- NeuroTherm is best known for treating chronic spinal pain using radiofrequency ablation. The company manufactures radiofrequency generators, electrodes, needles and the disposable Simplicity probe. The reason for the buy may be that St. Jude who also treats chronic pain using spinal cord stimulation, isn’t a much of player in the radiofrequency ablation market, giving them a larger role in the industry. St. Jude Medical will become the device maker to offer both radiofrequency ablation and spinal cord stimulation to manage chronic pain, affecting more Americans than heart disease, cancer and diabetes combined.

The deal will not take place until the third quarter of the year; the purchase will add $10 to $15 million to the Minnesota device maker's top line.

Rousseau, chief operating officer of St. Jude Medical, in the news release. “As the only medical device manufacturer with both RFA and spinal cord stimulation, this acquisition will enable us to offer more treatment options to patients worldwide who suffer from the debilitating effects of chronic pain.”

In 2011 the Institute of Medicine issued a report that chronic pain affects more than 116 million Americans and costs nearly $635 billion annually representing a significant market opportunity. Radiofrequency ablation involves a minimally invasive procedure to interfere with the pain signals felt in the neck or back heat is then applied to the nerves experiencing the pain to destroy them. It's meant to be used as an interventional therapy before patients can be treated with neuostimulation and if necessary surgery.
