Joseph R. Simoneau, PhD

I was born in Hartford, CT. My education took me from Bristol, CT to Worcester, MA; Belgium; Madison, WI; and State College, PA. Three seminal life experiences constitute the basis for writing CHEZ NOUS.

I studied in Belgium for almost 2 years in an international setting: Spaniards, Belgians, English, Irish and Africans. I spent time in Spain and France as well, broadening my understanding of human nature and the subtleties of cultures. I taught at Grahm Jr. College for 7 years, including English to Internationals. I reconnected with more cultures and experiences.

Finally, I wrote and later managed a writing group for a computer company, producing user guides for our field people. Writing became second nature for me, but challenges forever arose as fresh and new.

Chez François

"The iconic statement Je me souviens (I remember) epitomizes the French-Canadian habitants’ narrative on every license plate of Quebec. Dr. Joseph Simoneau has added to this narrative the diaspora of these proud people. He has done what many of us have thought of doing before this migrant population died out. The oral history from his parents of the good and the harsh times that formed their character now endures in their own “Franglais.” It is a story of subsistence farming in what is known as the Canadian Appalachians . . . Dr. Simoneau recounts the strong bonds and love that held these families together in a common goal."
