Join the Windy City Pet Expo on July 19 for Information about How to Keep Pets Safe from Fire

National Pet Fire Safety Day is July 15, the Windy City Pet Expo and Pet Tech Join Forces to give tips on how to keep animal-lovers and their pets safe.

CHICAGO - July 11, 2014 - PRLog -- It’s a situation most pet companions are familiar with: dogs zooming into the kitchen, knocking something over; cats hopping onto counters, spilling a drink. Pet Guardians laugh, or get frustrated, but it’s generally something that can be easily taken care of. What might not be easily resolved is a disaster, a fire, caused by a towel being knocked onto the stove by one of the pets, or something just as nonchalant.

Over 1,000 house fires are accidentally caused by pets, and over 500,000 pets are affected by home fires each year. Thom Somes, The Pet Safety Guy with Pet Tech, offers a couple of tips on how to keep your pet safe from flames:

·         Pet Proof Your Home: “Just as you would baby proof your home you should do the same for your pets,” says Somes, “Get down on your hands and knees and inspect your house from your pet’s point of view to identify any areas for concern and where pets could potentially be in danger or could accidentally start a fire.”

·         No Open Flames: Animals are naturally inquisitive by nature, and will likely attempt to inspect open flames. “Make sure your pet is not left unsupervised around any open flames and be sure to thoroughly extinguish all open flames before leaving your home.”

·         Home Alone: When pets are left home alone, it is best to keep them in an areas or room near an entrance so if needed, firefighters can easily find them.

More tips like these can be found at the Windy City Pet Expo on Saturday, July 19th, 2014 from 10am to 6pm, at the Odeum Expo Center. PetTech will be at the Expo with more information on Pet Safety, so attendees should be sure to stop by their booth and to see their stage presentation! Information on how to build a Pet First Aid Kit will be available as well.

The Windy City Pet Expo will also feature opportunities for fan photos and autographs with both Shorty Rossi (Animal Planet’s “Pit Boss” & “America’s Cutest Pets”) and Celebrity Dog Trainer Harrison Forbes (“Good Morning America” and the “Today Show”), along with more than 100 exhibitors, live entertainment and demonstrations, and a Petfinder.com mega-adoption area with more than 200 rescue pets available for adoption. Low-cost immunizations, discounted microchipping and free nail trims will also be available for all the furry friends who need them.

This free, indoor and air-conditioned event is expected to attract more than 12,000 attendees along with their furry, feathered and reptilian pals who are looking to enjoy a new and one-of-a-kind experience where all pets can enjoy a fun day out with their pet parent(s). All well-behaved pets are welcome, as long as they’re on a fixed lead (or in a carrier) and have proof of age-appropriate rabies vaccines.
