Educating Kids on Fishing and Ecology: SOLitude Lake Management Volunteered at Two Events

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - July 10, 2014 - PRLog -- Through its corporate volunteering and outreach program, The SOLution, SOLitude Lake Management, an industry leader in lake and pond management, fisheries management and related environmental services for the Eastern United States, focused company volunteer efforts on working with children to teach them the lifelong skill of fishing along with the value of maintaining ecological balance.

At Heritage Day at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria, VA on April 6, the SOLitude team hosted an educational booth. They taught school-aged children about the native fish and invertebrate species in their area. The children could see and learn about these animals in the fish tank at the booth. The team also showed children about the importance of gathering aquatic scientific data through electrofishing, which is a process with a specialized boat that allows a fisheries biologist to measure, quantify, and possibly tag fish that live in a particular waterbody.

At the Family and Youth Casting Call at Fletcher's Boat House in Washington, D.C on the C&O Canal, June 13-14, the team pre-stocked the canal with catfish in order to teach the children how to “catch and release” fish. The team worked one-on-one with school-aged children to teach fishing skills and also hosted a booth with a “shad spawning game,” which taught the children about the difficult and dangerous journey the shad face to journey upriver to lay their eggs.

“We all find these outdoor education opportunities so personally enriching,” said Shannon Junior, Aquatic Ecologist and Regional Manager. “Most of us found our love of nature at a young age, and, it is rewarding to share our passion with these amazing and smart children.”

For the second consecutive year, SOLitude volunteered at both events. Ms. Junior volunteered at the Family and Youth Casting Call for the past four years.
