H.O.W. Announces the 2014-2015 Dr. Robert C. Knapp Medical Student Award Recipients

Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper (H.O.W.) is pleased to announce the 2014-2015 recipients of the Dr. Robert C. Knapp Medical Student Award. Established in 2011, the awards allow medical students to shadow a board certified gynecologic oncologist.

PALM BEACH, Fla. - July 8, 2014 - PRLog -- Priority is given to Florida medical students and award-winning students must have completed a minimum of one month of elective time during their medical school years.  Each student will receive an award of $3,000 and if he or she presents at a recognized society, H.O.W. will contribute an additional $2,000 toward expenses.  Through these awards, H.O.W. hopes the students will consider a career in gynecologic oncology.

Students receiving awards for 2014-2015 are Ruslan Garcia, Dayaris Morffi, Daphne Papathomas and Lindsey Winer from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine; Jessica Clemons from Weill Cornell Medical College; Nicole Brzozowski, Joseph Ottolenghi, Madiha Sajid, Kelly Smith, Emily Tongdee and Elizabeth Whitham from Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine; and Blakele Bakker from the Florida State University College of Medicine.

"These exceptional students will be exposed to a wide array of gynecologic oncology practice activities and advanced research experience," said Jennifer McGrath, Executive Director for H.O.W. "With this award, H.O.W. hopes the students will be inspired to consider a career in gynecologic oncology."

Dr. Knapp, who serves as the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board for H.O.W., is co-inventor of CA125, the blood test for ovarian cancer.  He is the William H. Baker Professor of Gynecology, Emeritus at Harvard Medical School and a Visiting Scholar in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He is also the former Director of Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

H.O.W. (Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper), was founded by the late Jacquie Liggett and is a nonprofit organization that supports research in ovarian cancer by funding the Jacquie Liggett Fellowship; helps women with ovarian cancer in financial need through the Jacquie Liggett Angel Fund; presents free educational programs about ovarian cancer and provides scholarships to medical students interested in a career in gynecologic oncology through the Dr. Robert C.
