NEW YORK - July 15, 2014 - PRLog -- BEDFORD HILLS, NEW YORK July 2014 – Veterinary Center for Birds & Exotics - the first and only veterinary hospital caring exclusively for birds and other exotic pets in Westchester County, NY, and the surrounding areas –  hires an additional bird and exotic animal veterinarian. Owned by board-certified bird veterinarian, Dr. Laurie Hess, who treats only birds and other exotic animals such as rabbits, rodents (guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats, hamsters, gerbils, mice, degus), ferrets, reptiles (lizards, snakes, turtles, tortoises), amphibians, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, mini-pigs, and wallabies, the Veterinary Center is the only animal hospital in the tri-state area to cater to these unique animals with 3 veterinarians specially trained in their care. Dr. Lauren Thielan, a graduate of Texas A & M College of Veterinary Medicine, joins Dr. Hess and her associate, Dr. Michelle Ravich, at the Veterinary Center after intensive internship training at an extremely busy all-exotics veterinary hospital in Florida. All 3 veterinarians have completed several years of advanced internship and residency training beyond veterinary school to be able to care for these extraordinary exotic pets. Special Veterinary Care for Birds & Exotic Pets

“We treat so many species with completely different anatomies and different diseases that it’s a challenge to keep current,” says Hess. “That’s why with 3 specially trained vets, we feel that we can offer exotic pet owners a unique level of care.” No other veterinary hospital in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut area actually has a team of vets with advanced training in exotics that is able to provide treatment for these pets 6 days a week and be available for emergency phone consultations 24/7.

“We see patients from many different states, from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts, because of the unique services we offer,” comments Dr. Ravich. In addition to wellness check-ups and emergency treatment for birds and exotic pets, the Veterinary Center offers preventative medical care, new pet exams, traditional and endoscopic surgery, dental care, digital x-rays, ultrasound, laser treatment, boarding, nutritional and behavioral consultations, grooming (wing and nail trimming), geriatric care, hormone therapy, and health certificates for travel. The goal of the Veterinary Center’s staff is to provide comprehensive care in a specialized setting where everything was designed to meet the needs of the exotic pet.

“While other animal hospitals may see an occasional bird or other exotic animal, these pets are usually a sidelight to cats and dogs,” says Hess. “At the Veterinary Center, we don’t treat cats or dogs, so exotic pets are the focus, not the addition.”

The Veterinary Center’s doctors see patients by appointment Monday through Saturday. To schedule an appointment for your bird or exotic pet, visit www.avianexoticsvet.com, or call (914) 864-1414.
