MANHATTAN, Kan. - July 7, 2014 - PRLog -- So they say a plumber has plumbing problems, a mechanic is always working on his car, a construction worker is always working on a project at home, what about your Pest Management Professional?

Well, let's just say my wife and 3 kids make me well aware when they see a bug in our home, yard, fire pit, woods, car, you name it. Whether its a spider, mosquito, chigger, or a fly, I get a picture, text, phone call and the infamous statement, "Dad, saw a bug, time to treat the house." Or, "Dad, did you check the hotel room for bed bugs?" They have become very spoiled in this realm of their lives, but that is what we as pest management professionals are here for, to protect the ones that we love and their possessions to the best of our capability.

One question they have never asked me about is, "Should we be afraid that our home could be eaten by termites?" What would the answer be you ask?

Our family just celebrated our 10th Anniversary in our home just outside of Manhattan. We live in a wooded area, near the lake, in a subdivision that is a little over 40 years old. In Kansas we have a saying in the pest management business when it comes to termites. "You got them or you are going to get them". According to NPMA studies we are considered to be located in the Heavy Region for termite activity. This fact is especially important as your home ages. The longer it is there, termites have a longer time frame to find your home. When we were considering the purchase of our home, in our little neighborhood of 42 homes I knew of 6 that had termites. Since moving to the neighborhood, I now know of 14, and yes one of them is my own personal home. So, yes, my home is threatened by termites.

Am I concerned that termites will invade my home?

Absolutely!

I found live termites feeding on my home the very first time we entered with our realtor. We were concerned, but being in the profession, I knew I had an arsenal of products, techniques, and skilled technicians that could solve this problem. And it all started with the backbone of what we recommend for our termite protection at American Pest. "The Sentricon Termite Colony Elimination System".

The Sentricon System is a baiting system that over 18 research Universities have proven that it not only kills termites, it eliminates the entire colony.

With the Sentricon System it has a special option/tool, the Above Ground (AG) Station. These AG stations can be placed directly over active invasions. By placing these stations over the active infestations, once found, the termites will feed on the bait, take it back to colony, feed the rest of the colony, share the bait throughout the colony, and in turn will eliminate the entire colony.

When we found the termites in our home, we found them in not one location, but 8 locations. So when the Sentricon system was installed, 26 stations were placed around the exterior, and 10 AG stations were installed on the interior where the live infestation was found. Over the next couple of months termites devoured the bait in the 4 AG stations. After 90 days, no live termite activity was found in any of the areas of infestation. For the next 2 years no termite activity was found inside the home or in any of the exterior stations.

At 2 years 9 months termites were found in one of the exterior stations, the station was baited and the termites were quickly eliminated. But in this case the Sentricon System was doing exactly what we wanted it to do. This Sentricon System is not only used for curative infestations, but also as a preventative measure to catch termites foraging around your home before they invade.

To add to my previous answer, " Absolutely, I am concerned with termites invading my home. But I also know that with the Sentricon System being monitored by American Pest Technicians, we are ready for them."

Since the initial installation of the Sentricon System at my home, the system has gone through several advances.  Change in station design, 2 new bait matrixes, changes in monitoring schedules, and most recently the Always Active Technology.  Previously we would only place bait in the stations if termites were present.  Now with Always Active, we have bait in all the stations 24/7/365.  So when termites come to visit we have a nice surprise dinner waiting for them.  One in which we know that, when it is consumed, the termites will not return for a follow up visit.
