About the Film

In this compelling and hard-hitting film, courageous Black gay men break their silence and speak out about their depression. The film gently blurs the lines between what is and what could be, moving into the realm of a docu-drama and illuminating, through examples, the raw truths behind the silent pain that many Black gay men experience, including denial of sexual identity and sexual orientation, racism, discrimination and stigma, sexual abuse and trauma, an HIV positive diagnosis, the propagation and promotion of homophobia from religious leaders and their congregants, and the perils of loneliness, a sense of isolation and abandonment experienced by many growing older in the Black gay community.

The film was produced by Antoine Craigwell, president and CEO of Depressed Black Gay Men (http://dbgm.org/home.html) (DBGM), Inc., a NYC-based organization dedicated to raising awareness of the underlying factors contributing to Black gay men experiencing, living, struggling and suffering in silence with depression and through education, information and referral to mental health professionals, is working to stop one more Black gay man from killing himself.

“In many Black families, in our communities and in societies, gay men exist. Yet, because of the silence imposed by culture, the homophobia, stigma and the discrimination, Black gay men are living hidden, secretive and unfulfilled lives. Black gay men have an opportunity to acknowledge their pain and reach out for help so that they could achieve their potential,” says Craigwell.
