Redeemed: Samsung Launches Tizen, its New Independent OS

Samsung recently launched its new mobile handset, Samsung Z which is equipped with an all new operating system called Tizen. After Bada, Tizen is Samsung's second attempt to become a successful mobile operating system provider.

JAIPUR, India - July 5, 2014 - PRLog -- Speculations of Samsung redeeming its stature as an independent mobile operating system provider halted on a positive note when it launched the Tizen loaded handset, Samsung Z. The buzz regarding the development of Tizen had been floating around for a while as some Samsung handsets were spotted running the new OS at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in Feb'14.

With the advent of Tizen OS, Samsung may be planning to let go of Google's android OS that holds the credit of uplifting Samsung's position in the mobile market. The latest example for the switch is the Samsung Z that is all set to be owned by buyers in Russia. It can be deduced that we have one more alternate to choose from among the pre-existing mobile operating systems i.e. iOS, Android and Windows Phone.

If a question like, "What is Tizen and how is it different from Android?” has been buzzing in your mind, given below are some features of this new kid on the mobile operating system block:

•    Open Source
Tizen is an open source framework that allows hardware manufactures to modify the UI according to their own requirements. Samsung has borrowed a couple of engaging features from its previous home-produced operating system “Bada”. The Linux based -Tizen, came into existence when Intel and Samsung collaborated to transform the foregone platform of MeeGo which was originally created by the combined efforts of Nokia and Intel.

•    Broad Horizons
Tizen is a flexible operating system which can provide usability to several platforms apart from mobile phones. According to the co-CEO of Samsung Electronic J.K.Shin, Samsung aims to build an ecosystem of devices like TV's, laptops, smart watches, etc. that are interconnected through a common operating system.
In fact cellular phones are not the first devices to be armed with the Tizen OS; the first official Tizen device was a 2013 announced Samsung NX300M camera. Other developments include Tizen being modified for tablets and in-car entertainment systems.

•    HTML5
This one feature of Tizen being an HTML5-based platform comes as a boon to the content creators. It will provide shorter developmental cycle and cost of making an app over Tizen will be considerably less as the platform possibly works in sync with the web.
At the user's end we can expect enhanced native support for videos and the download of plug-ins won't be required in order to watch a You Tube video. The mobile applications for phones and tablets will be fairly smooth, enhancing the gaming experience in particular.

•    A Whole bunch of New Mobile Applications
Whenever a new mobile operating system evolves, it opens the possibilities for various new mobile applications to be developed. The developers and the app providers are also driven by the liability of adding one more dimension to their cross platform mobile applications. A similar scene was observed when the Windows Phone operating system was launched in 2010.

Mobile applications that are essential for smart phones have subsequently become a decisive factor in the growth of the given operating system.
Samsung has deployed its resources to maximize the app content in the Tizen Application Market. Its developers are creating mobile applications that will support both native and web apps, the company will import the existing Bada apps as well. A Tizen app challenge was launched by Samsung in 2013 which handed out $4 million worth of prizes to 64 winners who managed to develop both Tizen and HTML5 based mobile apps.

What’s Next?
The Korean manufacturer, Samsung, post recovery from the failure of its Bada mobile operating system has succeeded in making a commendable mark in the mobile market with its line of Galaxy handsets. It would be interesting to notice whether Samsung lets go its trustworthy android platform and gambles its stake in the market with the Tizen operating system. Maintaining the visibility of both the mobile operating systems by deploying them in different range of handsets can be one alternate yet confusing solution.

If we talk exclusively about Tizen as an operating system, the fact that it tends to serve multi platforms makes it a favorable open source platform to work upon. Moreover, work on version 3.0 of Tizen is already on and is expected to compete against the upcoming 64-bit enabled version of android.

Will Tizen provide an interactive UI? Does the open source feature provide a gateway to an enhanced mobile operating experience? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
