U.S. Manufacturing orders dropped

Factory orders declined after recent increases, but unfilled orders improved by 0.62 % to $1,087 billions.
 
July 4, 2014 - PRLog -- Orders for U.S.-made products decreased by -0.53 % in May, to $498 billions, a decrease by $2.6 billions from $500 in April on the seasonally adjusted basis, as orders for ships and boats declined -49.10 % to $3 billions, accounting for 0.55 % of total bookings, reported by the Commerce Department.

With bookings rising across the board, demand for primary metals, fabricated metal products, machinery orders, while orders for computers and related products declined.
Without a strong manufacturing sector, it is hard to see how economic growth can be realized. Bookings for U.S.-made products such as autos or appliances grew by 2.62 % over the past 12 months, and inventories by 2.86 %.

In April factory orders were revised to 0.79 % growth to $500 billions and manufacturing shipments to $498 billions an increase by 0.40 %.

Inventories remained unchanged in May on the seasonally adjusted basis, reported by the U.S. Commerce Department. Inventory to shipments ratio was unchanged at 1.30.

Another category of orders closely watched by economists, known as excluding defense and transportation, orders grew despite decrease in total orders, by 0.24 % on the seasonally adjusted basis and inventories by 0.24 % %.
That category excludes defense and transportation and gives a better indication of longer-term trends in the private sector.
Excluding defense and transportation grew by 2.46 % and unfilled orders by 11.38 % over the past 12 months.

The Commerce Department announced total manufacturing shipments edge up by 0.07 % to $498 billions, an increase of $0 billions from $498 in April in May on the seasonally adjusted basis, led by 4.28 % growth in turbines, generators and other power transmission equipment shipments, representing 0.8 % of total shipments. Shipments excluding transportation grew by 0.04 %.

Unfilled orders have increased by smaller rate than a month ago, unfilled booking increased by 0.62 % on the seasonally adjusted basis, led by 10.86 % increase in computers, accounting for 0.32 % of total factory unfilled orders. Compare to a year ago Unfilled orders jumped by 8.22 %.
