FindURClass is in conversation with George Lawrence, Technical Director of Steadfast Sports & Adventure Academy as he shares information about his academy, his hope of seeing India participating in the FIFA World Cup, his fitness secrets & discussing about his favourite team.

1. You’re one of the youngest internationally acclaimed football coaches in Mumbai. Please share with us your inspiring journey.

A: I got a job in Air India after my father expired. But I was extremely unhappy with the job as I was uncomfortable with the same. I always wanted to pursue my hobby which was football. That’s how I approached my mentor and the CEO of the company, Mr Dennis Fernandes, who offered me the post of an Assistant Coach. Soon, I went to Manchester United for a kids’ camp where I enhanced my coaching skills. Thereafter, I came back and built Steadfast with a free hand from Mr Fernandes. Now, I am an internationally certified coach with FA certification from England and recognition from USSF.

2. Now the FIFA world cup is going on. Which teams are you supporting and why?

A: The team which I am supporting has just moved on to the Quarter Finals, and that’s Brazil. The second team which I am supporting is Argentina followed by Germany. The fourth team which I am rooting for is the USA, since we are so strongly tied up them.

3. Coming to the strategies of these teams. Which strategy do you support the most and why?

A: Our strategy is 4-3-3. That’s our objective as well as playing style. We have to win the ball in 6 seconds and play an attacking game. As per the conditions in India, this strategy is the best needed and the most followed.

This strategy is similar to Germany, and being a Technical Director myself, I have always tried to promote the German style.

4. Since we are talking about FIFA, when do you think can we see India in the World Cup?

A: That’s a very important question and I’ve been asked the same multiple times in previous interviews. Till we don’t focus on our lower academies, we will not be able to achieve what we want. We need football and not just cricket in our gullies. Things are improving on this front, and with the U-17 World Cup of 2017 to be held in India, we can be sure of a huge boost for the love for football.

We need big corporates to invest money in football and that will change things, since football is the only game which keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout its 90 minutes.

5. What are your opinions on Indian Super League, the proposed football league in India by IMG-Reliance?

A: I just had a talk with John Abraham as well. He also has a team in the league. And I can say for sure that this is a really good thing, and we are grateful to IMG & Reliance for the initiation of this league. This will show the promise of good money to youngsters which is needed right now.

6. Any final words for all the students who are not sure about pursuing their hobby football.

A: Youngsters can make a career in football, as there are so many aspects to it apart from playing: physiotherapy, manager, coaching. Steadfast and Mumbai Rush are academies which help you make a career in football. Not just make you a fit football player but a ‘sports ambassador’ too.
