New service takes the financial sting out of a cancelled wedding

“It seemed to me to be a really great idea and after a lot of research I decided to launch my own version of the service in the UK,” said Aleema. “People who have to cancel their wedding - for whatever reason - are already heartbroken and having to face a huge financial loss for a day that will never happen makes things even worse. At the same time there are couples wanting to get married fairly quickly who can’t find a suitable date and venue, or maybe can’t afford the kind of wedding they would really like. By reselling the cancelling couple’s wedding, it helps everyone out.”

Aleema estimates around 25,000 weddings are cancelled in the UK every year and with the average cost of the whole package - venue, catering, photography, etc. - being in the region of £18,000 the amounts being paid unnecessarily by couples runs into hundreds of millions of pounds.

People tend to arrange their wedding many months, if not years, in advance and make staged payments to suppliers leading up to the big day, so if something goes wrong much, if not all, of the money they’ve paid will be lost. By selling on the basic components of the wedding at a discounted rate, the disappointed couple retrieve most of their costs while the other party gets the wedding they want at a price they can afford.

“Although couples will to some extent be buying a ready-made wedding they still have the flexibility to make it their own and make their individual choices. They will probably want different flowers for example or they might want to change the menu, it’s not cast in stone,” said Aleema.
