& Gullah/Geechee Culture

Charleston, SC—As Black Music Month 2014 comes to a close, the Gullah/Geechee Nation brings out the drums to call the entire world to gather for another Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week on the Sea Islands of the South Carolina coast culminating with the Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™ 2014 in Charleston, Georgetown, and Myrtle Beach, SC.   This will be the third year of celebrating the final week of July as “Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week.”  Each year, the celebration has been expanding.  It has become a larger partnership of cities and townships along the Gullah/Geechee Nation’s coast.   Initially launched in the City of Charleston, SC, the Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™ (www.gullahgeechee.info) will return there August 1 & 2 and will be the major site for gathering for this drum call.

Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) and Kwame Sha of All Mobile Productions™ (AMP™ www.ampturnitup.com) are the co-founders of the official international celebration of the Gullah/Geechee Nation.  Each year, they take the event to different parts of the African Diaspora and the Gullah/Geechee Nation.  This year, the journey will begin with the Charleston RiverDogs “Gullah/Geechee Nation Night at The Joe” on August 1st and will continue on Saturday, August 2nd from Noon to 7 pm at the Charleston Maritime Center.  Saturday is “Gullah/Geechee Reunion Day” and will feature a number of Gullah/Geechee craft artisans, painter Saundra Renee Smith, the premiere of the documentary, “Wilmington on Fire.” and performances by a number of native Gullah/Geechee musical groups.  The entire weekend of celebration will culminate with “Gullah/Geechee Famlee Day” in Georgetown and Myrtle Beach on Sunday, August 3rd.

The Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™ is the end of a week of Gullah/Geechee events and tours throughout the South Carolina coast.  “Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week” begins on Monday, July 28th and concludes on Sunday, August 3rd.  The week will begin with “De Gullah Root Experience Tour” of St. Helena Island by the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition and each day thereafter, events, businesses, and historic sites to support in Beaufort, Charleston, Georgetown, and Horry Counties will be featured at www.gullahgeecheenation.com and @GullahGeechee on Twitter.

The drum continues to beat in rhythm with the tide that flows to the Sea Island shores to call in all those that support the continuation of Gullah/Geechee culture.   For more information, go to www.gullahgeechee.info, email GullGeeCo@aol.com, or call (843) 838-1171.
