Follow on Google News | Girls Rock! DC Enters Seventh Year of Providing Summer Empowerment and Music Camps for Area GirlsBy: Girls Rock! DC During the camp, a staff of volunteer educators, musicians, artists and community organizers provide campers with small-group instruction on electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, turntables, digital music, or vocals. Campers form bands and are coached by DC area musicians to write and perform original songs and compile DJ sets which they perform at a showcase at the conclusion of the camp at two of DC’s most popular music venues, The Black Cat and 9:30 Club. Campers also attend workshops that address a variety of topics to help develop specific skills, increase self-esteem and connect their experience at camp to their future goals and aspirations. Due to the swift growth and popularity of the camp, this year’s Girls Rock! DC camp will offer two week-long sessions for two age groups; girls 8 – 12 years old will attend July 7 – July 12 and girls 13 – 18 years old will attend July 14 – July 19. The camp will run daily from Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and will be held at the E.L. Haynes Public Charter School (3600 Georgia Ave. NW, Washington, DC, 20010). The camp showcases will be held on the final day of camp at DC’s Black Cat on Saturday July 12th (8 – 12 year olds) and 9:30 Club on Saturday, July 19th (13 – 18 year olds).
