PRLog - Jun. 28, 2014 - LONDON, U.K. -- Otoplasty is performed on adults on various reasons. Usually the external build of the ears is understood when a child is around 3 or 4 years old for prominent or protruding ears. Sometimes children are born without an auricle and many times the external construction of the ears is deformed from birth.

Often parents don’t notice the prominent ears in their children or sometimes parents are skeptical to have their child under the knife and fix their protruding or unevenly shaped ears. Given that ears are not much of a focal aesthetic feature in us parents often seem to neglect the case of prominent ears. However, this might be different for children to cope with, with bullies in school, and general self-consciousness, sometimes it is the child who would want their prominent ears to flatten.

Especially girls and women are very conscious about their looks. Hence, once the children are adults, they want to opt for the vaser (http://www.harleybodyclinic.co.uk/) surgery their parents had backed off from. Other reasons of Otoplasty for adults include correcting sudden accident, infection or an allergic behavior to some ornament that had permanently deformed the earlobes. All in all there are sundry reasons that this surgery is opt for by adults.

For adults the surgery is difficult because their ears are completely formed and the cartilage of the ears has become hard and rigid. Otoplasty or ear pinning vaser surgery is performed by of course cutting the cartilage of the ears, which is a bone and reconstructing it.

For children the ear correction surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. For adults local anaesthesia does or local anaesthesia with or without sedation might suffice, otherwise patients can opt for general anaesthesia as well.

There is no atypical technique to perform a surgery, the design and diagram of it all depends on individualistic conditions of the ears of the patient, the hardness and angle of the cartilage, the size and shape of the concha and the patient’s expectation from the surgery.

What the surgery involves is once the anaesthesia has successfully administered an incision is made usually in the back of the ears is made where a skin fold connects the ears to the head. Now depending on the patient’s conditions the surgeon reshapes the cartilage by removing a small portion that might make the ears look normal enough, or the cartilage can be pulled closer to the head and stitched with non-removal sutures. Otherwise skin is also removed from the ears and suturing the skin without the requirement to cut any cartilage.

Once the reshaping part of the ears is done, the incisions are closed and left for some time to dry. Then the ears are bandaged with cotton and other dressing techniques. The whole surgery takes 3-4hours of time and healing and downtime takes 7-10days. The patient will leave the hospital or clinic on the same day, unless opted for general anaesthesia. The bandage is supposed to be worn for 3-days then to get to a more compact dressing covering only the ears. Otoplasty cost in London starts at £2,350-£2,500 from a well reputed clinic.
