NCRA to showcase court reporting as career at American School Counselors Association Conference

June 27, 2014 - PRLog -- VIENNA, Va.—The National Court Reporters Association, the country’s leading organization representing stenographic court reporters, broadcast captioners, and Communication Access Realtime Translation, or CART, providers, will join more than a dozen associations representing a variety of professions and trades at the American School Counselors Association’s Annual Conference June 29 - July 1 in Orlando, Fla., to showcase court reporting as a viable career choice that has growing employment opportunities.  More than 2,000 school counseling professionals are expected to attend the event.

The conference will also serve as a venue for First Lady Michelle Obama to discuss Reach Higher, her latest initiative that focuses on inspiring all students in America to take charge of their future by pursuing and completing some form of higher education.

Christina Lewellen, NCRA senior director of marketing, membership, and communications, will talk about the court reporting profession during a kick-off session called “Careers your students need to know about” on Sun., June 29, and offer information about the growing need for court reporters in the workplace, and the many potential career options such as working as an official, a freelancer, or a broadcast captioner.

In addition, NCRA member Gayl Hardeman, RDR, CRR, CCP, a CART provider from Pinellas Park, Fla., will provide a captioning demonstration during the kick-off session called “Careers your students need to know about” on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Several NCRA members and court reporting students will also be available at the booth on Monday and Tuesday to answer attendees’ questions about court reporting careers, the benefits of the profession, court reporting schools, and various employment opportunities.

“NCRA recognizes the important role school counselors play in the decisions many students make regarding their future, and our volunteers are looking forward to increasing awareness about the court reporting profession,” said Jim Cudahy, NCRA’s executive vice president and CEO.

“A major part of NCRA’s vision plan is to establish programs, services, and initiatives aimed at tripling the number of students in North American court reporting programs by 2018,” said Cudahy.
