Follow on Google News | WOU – an award winning international and local Open Distance Learning (ODL) providerWOU received the prestigious Commonwealth of Learning (COL) Awards of Excellence for Institutional Achievement as well as for Distance Education Materials during the 7th Pan-Commonwealth Forum on Open Distance Learning (ODL) held in Abuja, Nigeria last December. The awards were in recognition of the University’s innovative and effective application of learning technologies and open education resources in the delivery of ODL programmes via part-time study. The COL is an intergovernmental organisation created by Commonwealth Heads of Government and comprising of over 50 countries to encourage the development and sharing of ODL knowledge, resources and technologies. With WOU’s high standing in the global arena, this further reaffirms the quality of the University’s programmes and assures graduates of greater esteem among employers, which in turn enhances their career prospects in today’s competitive marketplace. Meanwhile locally, WOU was awarded a Tier-5 or ‘excellent’ WOU’s programmes have also gained recognition from industry-related professional bodies, such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW), Certified Practising Accountants Australia (CPA Australia), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA, UK), Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA), and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). This provides a fast-track for graduates to become a Chartered Accountant. The awards and recognition bolster WOU’s image and offers added advantage to WOU graduates. The University has distinguished itself to become a provider of academic programmes on par with national and international standards. More than 14,000 working professionals have to date seized the learning opportunities provided by WOU. All WOU programmes are accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), with 13 also gaining recognition from the Public Service Department (JPA) following the graduation of its first batch of students. WOU, through its four Schools, presently offers 25 Bachelor’s degree programmes in such fields as accounting, banking and finance, corporate administration, management, sales and marketing, human resource management, electronics, English Studies, education and psychology.
