The CHSCF is once again looking for interested young adults to attend this year’s “Sample Camp.” This is the second year the foundation will host the day camp to give campers a taste of what going to a camp with other cancer patients would be like. At “Sample Camp” the young adults can come alone or bring a friend and enjoy a day of adventure camp and team building. By hosting the day of “Sample Camp” the foundation hopes to inspire and send campers to attend out of state camps covering all travel expenses. At the end of the camp day representatives from various camps will be able to answer questions along with a panel of experienced campers.
“The emotional needs and support of young adults are much different than children or older adults battling cancer. They must face a very uncertain future in a time when their friends are planning for the future,” said Domenic Venditti, CHSCF board member and Sample Camp director. “When young adults with cancer attend a weeklong camp they will find strength and support as they engage in support groups involving peer interaction. They will challenge themselves physically by participating in outdoor activities and they will find the tools that help them manage the emotional side of their battle allowing them to feel like they are back in charge of their own life.” To date CHSCF has provided assistance to 31 young adults making a huge difference in their lives.
Each year, more than 70,000 young adults are diagnosed with cancer. Being a young adult cancer patient or survivor is difficult on a good day. The Cassie Hines Shoes Cancer Foundation was created to support young adults with cancer from the beginning of their battle to life beyond cancer. The foundation’s mission is to not only send young adults to camp but to educate and guide them on support programs and services that can help them manage their mental healing as well as their physical battle with cancer.
